Yoga Food Recipes Guide

As far as its literal meaning is concerned, yoga, which is a Sanskrit word, means 'union'. But in the present context, yoga refers to yoga asanas or yogic exercises. An individual following the yoga philosophy is called a yogi (male) or a yogini (female).

Yogis and yoginis follow a special yoga food diet. Yoga food consists of fruits, vegetables, nut and whole grains. Yoga diet focuses on an individual to have small meals. Eating and chewing food slowly is highly emphasized in yoga. Yogis and yoginis believe in eating food at optimum temperature. Yoga food and wine does not go together as smoking and alcohol are a strict no-no for yogic practitioners.

As far as yoga food recipes are concerned, it consists on high quality food cooked in less oil and less spices. Food is classified as Rajasik Food, Tamasik Food and Sattvik Food in yoga. According to the yogic classification, Rajasik Foods are those which are excessively high in energy and which causes restlessness. Tamasik Foods results to laziness after consumption. And Sattvik Foods are the right kind of food to be had. Such are food cooked in very less oil and minimal spices, and which retains its nutritive value. As far as vegetarianism and yoga is concerned, it is recommended but not all yogis are yoginis are vegetarians necessarily.

Yoga diet aims at providing a balanced nutrition to an individual for an individual’s good health and for him/her to be free from diseases. And hence, food supplements are not required for yogic practitioners.
